  • During the online yoga class, the student will be asked to complete the recommended activities to the best of their ability.  Please explain to them that if they experience any symptoms, pain, discomfort, or other concerns that may occur or change at any point during the class, they should immediately abstain from the recommended Activities.
  • Please ensure that the student has sufficient space to move around, and the room is clear of hazards
  • Clothing should be comfortable and modest, shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. The student should be barefoot, ideally on a non-slip mat or hard surface or wooden floor.

  • ALL STUDENTS MUST KEEP THEIR VIDEOS ON, USE THEIR OWN NAME ON THEIR SCREEN AND BE CLEARLY VISIBLE TO THE TEACHER.  This is for safeguarding purposes.  Participants who do not do this or who do not behave in a way that maintains online safety for all students will be removed from the Zoom class.

Why is the class aimed at children aged 6+?  In Iyengar yoga we only encourage children from the age of six to take classes. A six-year-old child is usually at school and is used to some sort of discipline and is able to watch and listen when a pose is demonstrated. More importantly, most of them have learnt the difference between their left and right sides. The physiological reason behind the age limit is however more significant. Under the age of six most children’s heads are bigger in proportion to their body, especially their arms, so they should not attempt to do Sirsasana or Sarvangasana because the arms would not be able to support the head, neck and body. Apart from that, some of the bones of the skull have not properly fused. Pressure on the head in Sirsasana could lead to nerve damage if the pose is performed wrongly. Furthermore the big muscles in the body, which help stability, have not developed.

No Observers: We understand that some yoga teachers may see this as an opportunity for them to observe and learn how to teach children, which is great!  However for safeguarding reasons, we have decided that we should not allow anyone to observe if their own children are not taking part.  If you are interested in learning to teach children, Abhijata Iyengar will be teaching a series of children’s classes as well as Teaching Methodology workshops from February on behalf of IYNAUS but open to Iyengar yoga teachers in other countries, find out more here.
